Canadian cyclists embark on long-distance expeditions
Two separate long-distance cycling expeditions involving Canadian participants are underway.
In the Wings of Survival project, endurance athlete Leanna Carriera and conservation scientist Timm Dobert are undertaking a 30,000-kilometre journey from Alaska to Patagonia. The mission aims to reconnect people with nature by paralleling the migration of the Hudsonian whimbrel. Using GPS trackers on the birds, the team documents biodiversity loss and environmental pressures through storytelling and interactive maps.
Separately, filmmakers Lucas Cullen and Tommy DeWitt from Kelowna have begun a 2,700-kilometre bike trek across Japan, traveling from Cape Soya to Kagoshima. The duo is filming a documentary titled ‘True Friends’ to capture their journey and the beauty of the country while testing their friendship.
