Kelowna mayoral candidates debate public safety amid business concerns

Business owners in Kelowna are expressing increasing frustration over rising crime and social disorder. Local entrepreneur Gerald Goertsen reported recent incidents of property destruction and vehicle break-ins, stating that the current environment feels unsafe for commerce.

During the mayoral campaign, incumbent Tom Dyas has proposed a ‘safer streets’ platform. His plan includes adding 75 new frontline public-safety positions, such as RCMP, bylaw, and firefighter roles, alongside increased detox and treatment services.

Candidate Cannan has disputed Dyas’s claims that he voted against public-safety measures. Cannan clarified that his previous votes were directed at overall budget spending rather than specific safety resources, arguing for an assessment of how existing resources are deployed before further investment.
