Interior Health defends Kelowna safe consumption site
Interior Health is defending the Outreach Urban Health Centre, a safe consumption site in downtown Kelowna, following a request from Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas and the City Council to deny its renewal by the Federal Ministry of Health.
Mayor Dyas cited significant safety concerns, noting that since the site opened in 2021, the RCMP has responded to 3,466 calls for service in the immediate area, the Kelowna Fire Department has handled 371 medical calls and 24 outdoor fire calls, and bylaw services responded to 420 incidents.
Dr. Sue Pollock, Interior Health’s chief medical health officer, stated that the site is ultimately saving lives. She noted that the toxic drug crisis remains a public health emergency, with 887 deaths recorded in the Central Okanagan since the emergency was declared in 2016, including 46 deaths in the first half of this year. Pollock expressed a commitment to ongoing dialogue with the city to balance community well-being with essential healthcare access.
