Kelowna students seriously injured in SUV collision near school bus

Kelowna vehicle collision school bus safety student injuries RCMP investigation Upper Mission accident

Two elementary school students were seriously injured in Kelowna’s Upper Mission neighbourhood after being struck by an SUV on Thursday, September 24. According to the Kelowna RCMP, the children were in the process of crossing the street after being dropped off by a school bus when the vehicle, traveling in the opposite direction, struck them.

Emergency crews responded to the intersection of Arbor View Drive and Marin Crescent just before 1 p.m. Both children were transported to the hospital in serious condition. The driver of the SUV was taken into custody during the investigation, though police stated that alcohol was not considered a contributing factor. One individual was previously released, and no charges have been laid at this time.

Central Okanagan Public Schools (SD 23) has deployed its Post Critical Incident Response Team to support affected students, staff, and families. The RCMP is currently investigating whether the school bus had activated its flashing red lights at the time of the collision and has issued a reminder to drivers regarding the legal requirement to stop for school buses.
