Kelowna to build $18 million swimming structure on Okanagan Lake

The City of Kelowna has announced plans to construct an $18 million swimming structure on Okanagan Lake. The project, located at City Park, aims to re-establish a public swimming destination at the former site of the Ogopogo Stadium and Pool, which was destroyed by fire in 1969.

Funding for the initiative includes $12.9 million from the WAVE Prize, a grant provided by the non-profit Swim Drink Fish and supported by the Weston family. The City of Kelowna will contribute $5.1 million from its capital funding. The municipality will oversee the design, construction, and operation of the facility.

The proposed venue will feature eight 50-metre swim lanes, protected swimming areas, sun decks, shade areas, and a multi-height jumping platform. It is also designed to accommodate water polo, recreational programming, and a Nordic cold-plunge area, with the potential for year-round use. The facility will be free for public use to promote active lifestyles and environmental stewardship. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with a target completion date in 2027.
