Stella Lefty faces songwriting and 'nepo baby' accusations

Country-pop singer Stella Lefty is facing significant social media scrutiny and accusations of musical plagiarism following the release of her debut album, ‘Long Way Home’. Critics and listeners have pointed to similarities between several of her tracks and established hits. Her breakout song, ‘Boston’, previously led to Noah Kahan receiving a songwriting credit due to its resemblance to ‘Stick Season’. More recently, her track ‘Why Wouldn’t We’ has been compared to Blake Shelton’s 2017 song ‘I’ll Name the Dogs’ regarding its chorus melody and lyrical structure.

Beyond songwriting disputes, Lefty has faced criticism regarding her background as the daughter of billionaire Eric Lefkofsky, with some social media users labeling her a ‘nepo baby’ or ‘industry plant’. This backlash intensified following her debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry. In response to the criticism of her Opry appearance, artist Kelsea Ballerini defended Lefty, stating the venue is meant to celebrate all kinds of country music from diverse backgrounds.

Lefty has addressed the songwriting similarities, maintaining that any resemblance to other artists' work is unintentional. Regarding ‘Boston’, she noted that the arrangement process was difficult and that an earlier, faster version of the song was ultimately rejected because it changed the track's feel entirely.
