Kemal Günay's Historic Mill in Malatya Keeps Tradition Using Modern Power

A century‑old grain mill in the Akçadağ district of Malatya Province continues to serve the local community despite technological changes. Originally powered by water, the mill later used diesel generators before being converted to electric operation.

The mill is run by 62‑year‑old Kemal Günay, who inherited the trade from his father and grandfather. He operates the mill together with his brother and nephews, grinding wheat into flour and bulgur for residents of surrounding villages, especially during the two‑month grinding season that follows the apricot harvest. Customers typically bring pre‑cooked bulgur, and the grinding process, including sifting and bagging, takes about an hour per batch.

By adapting to electricity while preserving traditional stone‑grinding methods, the mill maintains product quality and meets winter food‑stock needs for the region.
