Kemal Öztürk faces detention order over remarks on Arab Alawites
Journalist Kemal Öztürk is facing a legal investigation and a detention order following controversial remarks made during an NTV broadcast regarding Syria’s Arab Alawite (Nusayri) minority. During a discussion on the humanitarian situation in areas like Idlib and Afrin, Öztürk stated that the horrific stories he had heard might make one feel that “it would be fitting if all these Nusayris were massacred,” though he noted they did not seek revenge.
The Samandağ Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched the investigation following complaints from citizens and civil society groups. A detention order was issued, with instructions sent to the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to present Öztürk for questioning via the SEGBIS videoconferencing system on September 1, 2026.
Political and religious organizations, including the DEM Party and the Turkey Alevi Federation, have condemned the remarks as hate speech that targets a religious identity. RTÜK member İlhan Taşcı also filed a formal application for the regulator to review the broadcast under Law No. 6112, which prohibits content that incites hatred or enmity.
Öztürk has denied calling for a massacre, asserting that his comments were taken out of context. He claimed he was actually discussing the restraint shown by the Syrian government despite the atrocities committed, and he expressed regret to any Alevi or Nusayri individuals who were hurt by his words.
