Kemi Badenoch pledges to scrap inheritance tax on family homes

At the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, leader Kemi Badenoch announced a major policy platform centered on tax reductions and economic reform. A flagship proposal is the abolition of inheritance tax on family homes for those who pass property to direct descendants. Under this plan, the individual threshold would rise to £500,000, and couples would be permitted an additional £1 million tax-free allowance.

Badenoch also pledged to scrap Stamp Duty on primary residences and roll back proposed mansion taxes. To fund these measures and other spending, such as increased defense and prison capacity, the party aims to achieve £70 billion in savings by cutting spending on the civil service, regulators, and welfare.

The announcement comes as the Conservatives face significant electoral challenges, currently polling around 20% and trailing both Labour and Reform UK. Badenoch explicitly rejected any electoral alliance with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, framing the upcoming general election as a battle for the 'soul of the nation.' While the policy aims to reduce the number of families affected by inheritance tax by more than half, critics note that the tax currently affects less than 5% of estates.
