Kemi Badenoch supports local referendums on asylum seeker housing

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has expressed support for holding local referendums regarding the housing of asylum seekers at military bases in Suffolk, specifically mentioning RAF Barnham. Badenoch stated that such votes are “a good way of showing the strength of public feeling” and represent residents “asking for help.”

The UK Home Office is considering relocating more than 1,000 asylum seekers to RAF Barnham while their applications are processed. The government maintains that using military bases serves as a temporary and more cost-effective alternative to using hotels.

Local opposition and concerns have emerged, with some residents citing potential increases in anti-social behavior and crime. In response, Barnham Parish Council is considering an independence referendum, though such a vote would hold only symbolic significance. Additionally, Reform UK representatives on the Suffolk County Council have called for a public referendum on the housing plan. While the Green Party has criticized the initiative, the Labour group argued that the council should prioritize other spending areas.
