Ken Griffin pledges $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University
Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel, has pledged $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, marking the largest individual donation in the history of American higher education. The gift is split between two major initiatives: $2 billion to establish a new 35-acre campus in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood and $1 billion to support the university’s Pittsburgh campus.
The new Miami campus is designed to move away from traditional academic majors, instead focusing on four societal challenges: human health and biological discovery, national security and strategic capabilities, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing and industrial transformation. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first students—primarily graduate students—slated to enroll in 2028. The campus is projected to eventually accommodate over 3,500 students.
In Pittsburgh, the $1 billion allocation will be divided equally between the university’s highest priorities and the School of Computer Science, which will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. Griffin will also join the university’s board of trustees.
