Ken Kutaragi predicts AI will transform entertainment by 2029
Ken Kutaragi, the engineer known as the father of PlayStation, predicts that generative artificial intelligence will fundamentally transform the entertainment industry by 2028 or 2029. In an interview with the Japanese outlet 4Gamer, Kutaragi argued that the video game industry has stalled in technological innovation, noting that modern AAA productions require massive budgets for marginal improvements in shading and dialogue compared to the rapid advancements seen in AI.
Kutaragi expects that once real-time AI video and audio generation reaches the processing speeds of current gaming hardware, traditional game development—including pre-designed levels and scripted logic—will be replaced. He suggests that interactive content will instead be generated dynamically from personal ideas, conversations, and even daydreams. He noted that the industry has allowed companies like NVIDIA and AMD to lead in complex computing spaces, and predicted that the wider entertainment market could eventually expand to approximately 17 trillion euros.
