Spin Time community faces housing crisis in Rome after building seizure
The Spin Time Labs community in Rome is facing a humanitarian crisis following a fire on July 29 and the subsequent seizure of the building. Approximately 400 residents, representing 27 nationalities, have been displaced, with many now living in makeshift camps on the street amidst extreme summer heat.
Negotiations between the City of Rome and the property owner, Investire SGR, have reached a deadlock. The municipality proposed purchasing the building to facilitate a safe return for residents, but the owner rejected the offer, citing the building's uninhabitable state. In response, Investire SGR has offered 500,000 euros to assist with temporary housing, a sum activists claim is insufficient compared to the 800,000 euros estimated by city technicians for necessary safety repairs.
While the municipal administration has successfully relocated about 160 people, many residents remain in street camps, reporting severe psychological distress and health risks. The situation has also sparked political controversy; while some leaders advocate for the community's social value, others have raised security concerns following the discovery of 700 grams of hashish during a police inspection of the premises.
