Ken Ofori-Atta corruption trial to resume August 27

The criminal trial of former Ghanaian Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is scheduled to resume on August 27, 2026. This follows a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the constitutional validity of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) Act, 2017, affirming the agency's authority to investigate and prosecute corruption.

Ofori-Atta faces 28 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences stemming from investigations into revenue assurance contracts between Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). The proceedings had been paused since April 2026 due to legal challenges regarding the OSP's prosecutorial powers.

Several other individuals are standing trial alongside the former minister, including former GRA Commissioners-General Emmanuel Kofi Nti and Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, former Customs Commissioners Isaac Crentsil and Kwadwo Damoah, SML CEO Evans Adusei, and former Chief of Cabinet Ernest Darko Akore.

Separately, Ofori-Atta has secured permanent residency in the United States after a US Immigration Court approved his application for adjustment of status. While his legal team noted the approval of his Green Card, the OSP has maintained that the immigration decision does not impact the ongoing criminal proceedings.
