Ken Ofori-Atta indicted in Ghana, declared fugitive and faces US extradition

Former Ghanaian Finance Minister Ken Ofori‑Atta is on trial in Accra's High Court on a 78‑count criminal indictment that accuses him of conspiring to influence procurement, falsifying work certifications and causing a loss of GH₵1.4 billion in the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited scandal.

After failing to appear for interrogation, the Office of the Special Prosecutor designated Ofori‑Atta a fugitive and secured an Interpol Red Notice. Parallel investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office and the National Intelligence Bureau are probing cross‑border money‑laundering and fiscal crimes. The Ghana Attorney‑General has lodged an extradition request with the United States Department of Justice, noting that Ofori‑Atta’s recent U.S. permanent‑residence adjustment does not shield him from the charges.
