Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’ receives 4K restoration and theatrical re-release
A new 4K restoration of Ken Russell’s 1971 film ‘The Devils’ is set for a theatrical re-release via the Warner Clockwork imprint. The film, which has faced heavy censorship and bans for decades, dramatizes the 17th-century demonic possession trials in Loudun, France, and the execution of priest Urbain Grandier.
The restoration includes previously unseen and censored material, such as the controversial “rape of Christ” sequence. Critics note the film’s themes regarding the use of religion by despotic leaders to oppress populations remain highly relevant. The film has recently seen significant interest, including a sold-out screening at the New York Film Festival.
