Ken Russell’s The Devils returns for limited theatrical re-release
Ken Russell’s 1971 film, The Devils, is returning for a limited theatrical run following strong ticket sales and renewed interest in the director’s work. Originally released to significant controversy, the film depicts the historical case of Urbain Grandier, a 17th-century priest in Loudun, France, who was accused of witchcraft and possession.
The film was subject to various censorship efforts upon its release; British censors criticized its content, while Warner Bros. removed key scenes for the United States market. The current version is a restored, uncensored edition that incorporates footage rescued by critic Mark Kermode from the Warner Bros. vaults.
Based on works by Aldous Huxley and John Whiting, the film explores themes of religious repression, persecution, and carnal desire. Due to high demand, additional screening dates have been added to the original schedule.
