Ken Sim seeks re-election as Vancouver Mayor
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim has announced his candidacy for re-election under the banner of his party, ABC Vancouver. His campaign focuses on public safety, affordability, and economic stability.
A central component of Sim’s platform is a proposed public safety plebiscite for the October 17 election. This would allow voters to weigh in on two issues: stricter laws regarding open-air hard drug use in public spaces and the use of the former St. Paul’s Hospital site for a mental health facility featuring 100 involuntary care beds. Sim noted that implementing these changes would require provincial support, as the municipal government lacks jurisdiction over health policy.
ABC Vancouver has also pledged a second consecutive annual property tax freeze, the elimination of residential parking fees, and free parking at community centres and beaches. The party aims to revitalize Granville Street’s pedestrian zone and develop 4,200 rental homes on city-owned land.
Sim acknowledged the significant challenges faced during his first term, noting that municipal reserves were at $33 million upon his entry into office against a $3 billion budget. Critics, including Vancouver Greens Councillor Pete Fry, have characterized the proposed plebiscite as a “cynical election move” intended to create a “wedge issue.”
