Kennedy Center appoints Rick Canny as artistic director amid political disputes

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has appointed Rick Canny as its new artistic director, a move occurring amidst ongoing legal and political disputes regarding the venue. Canny, a music representative and consultant with ties to the Trump administration, will oversee creative programming, booking strategies, and industry sponsorships. His role is currently designated as an executive consulting capacity rather than a standard employee position.

Internal communications indicate Canny intends to prioritize revenue-generating large-scale events over smaller projects like podcasts or book signings. He is also leading a transition of the center’s ticketing system from Tessitura to Ticketmaster to streamline operations.

The appointment comes as the center faces significant instability. Following efforts to rename the venue after President Donald Trump, the institution has faced protests and boycotts from various performers. While the president has sought to fill the board and staff with allies, a federal judge previously ordered the removal of signage bearing his name. The center is also undergoing a major renovation project that has led to temporary closures.
