A legal battle has intensified over the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., as Representative Joyce Beatty filed an emergency motion to block the restoration of Donald Trump’s name to the venue.

The Kennedy Center board, composed largely of Trump allies, recently voted to rename the surrounding area ‘President Donald J. Trump Plaza’ and to inscribe a new title on the building’s facade: ‘The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.’ This plan includes a secondary inscription if the Trump Kennedy Center Fund reaches $100 million.

The board’s actions follow a May 2026 ruling by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who determined that the institution had illegally added Trump’s name to the building, noting that a 1964 law designates the center as a living memorial to John F. Kennedy and prohibits it from being a memorial to anyone else.

Additionally, Department of Justice attorneys stated in court that the previous installation and removal of the nameplate caused damage to the building’s historic marble cladding. The Kennedy Center has indicated it will not attempt to engrave the new name before September 8 to allow for ongoing legal proceedings.
