A section of the ceiling in the Grand Foyer of the Kennedy Center collapsed following severe storms in Washington, D.C. No injuries were reported during the incident. The collapse left a large hole in the ceiling and debris across the foyer's red carpet.

Kennedy Center spokesperson Roma Daravi stated that the structural failure is a result of decades of neglect and deferred maintenance by previous leadership. The center's board, which is aligned with President Donald Trump, is using the incident to advocate for a $250 million renovation plan that would require closing the venue for two years.

The proposed renovations are currently the subject of legal disputes. In May, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that adding Trump's name to the building was illegal and blocked the administration from closing the venue. The board has since proposed alternative ways to honor the president, such as adding an inscription stating the facility was ‘Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.’

Rep. Joyce Beatty has challenged the board's renovation and closure plans in court, arguing the decision was rushed.
