Kennedy Center board delays restoring Trump name to facade
The Kennedy Center board of trustees has informed a federal court that it will delay attempts to restore President Donald Trump’s name to the venue’s facade until at least September 8. This development is part of an ongoing legal battle regarding the board’s recent decisions to rename the facility and its grounds, as well as a plan to close the center for two years of renovations.
In a joint status report, the board and the U.S. Department of Justice argued that a tarp and scaffolding currently covering the building’s facade are necessary for structural repairs and water testing. However, Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Democratic lawmaker and board member, has challenged this, accusing the board of using the construction as a pretext to obscure the building and defy a prior court order that required Trump’s name to be removed.
The board’s proposed changes include adding an inscription stating the venue was ‘Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump’ and renaming the surrounding grounds ‘President Donald J. Trump Plaza’. The board also indicated that further references to the president could be added if a specific endowment fund reaches $100 million. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper previously ruled that the board lacked the authority to add Trump’s name to the memorial, which is dedicated to John F. Kennedy.
