Kennedy Center faces legal and leadership challenges amid Trump takeover
The Kennedy Center is facing significant legal and administrative hurdles following Donald Trump’s takeover of the institution. In February 2025, Trump removed former board members and assumed the role of board chair. A subsequent attempt to add his name to the building’s exterior was ruled unlawful by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper in May 2026, as a 1964 law requires congressional approval for such changes.
Amid a planned two-year renovation and closure, the center has appointed talent manager Rick Canny to help shape its creative direction and programming. The renovation project has faced scrutiny regarding its necessity and costs, with Congress approving over $250 million for the upgrades in 2025.
Kerry Kennedy has publicly criticized the administration’s focus on the venue, questioning the priority of reshaping the cultural institution while citizens face rising costs for essentials like healthcare and groceries. She described the center as a ‘living memorial’ to her uncle, John F. Kennedy, and argued for its preservation over disputes regarding presidential naming rights.
