Kennedy Center inspections reveal safety hazards and structural decay
Inspection reports from 2021 and 2022, conducted during the Biden administration, revealed significant structural and safety issues at the Kennedy Center. The evaluations detailed outdated fire safety systems, inadequate protection against terrorist attacks, and water leaks in a transformer room.
Architectural reviews identified several health and safety hazards, including lead-painted steel beams, insufficient bathroom ventilation, and sealants containing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), a cancer-linked chemical. The reports also noted rusted wiring that violates building codes, extensive cracks in walls and roof panels, and a membrane in poor condition near the end of its useful lifespan.
Additionally, the Project Management Office faced staffing shortages and high turnover, which hindered maintenance efforts. A spokesperson for the Kennedy Center stated that the previous administration focused on new construction rather than necessary repairs to the main performing arts center.
