Kennedy Center faces demolition threats and legal battles
The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., has been closed indefinitely following a vote by its board of trustees to undergo extensive repairs. The board, which includes Trump appointees, cited acute risks to public safety and structural deterioration, including a partial ceiling collapse, as reasons for the closure.
President Donald Trump has threatened that the facility could be “ripped down” if his administration does not receive recognition for its renovation efforts. This follows a legal dispute in which a federal judge blocked the board from renaming the institution to include the president’s name.
A photograph of the president aboard Air Force One, appearing to review a poster titled “Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED,” has further intensified concerns regarding the building’s future. In response to these threats and the sudden closure, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ordered the Kennedy Center to provide at least 30 days’ notice before implementing any major physical changes or demolition plans.
Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty has challenged the closure in court, seeking to protect the historic institution from potential abandonment or destruction. Meanwhile, thousands of protesters have gathered in Washington to form a human chain around the center in opposition to the president’s plans.
