Trump’s name removed from the Kennedy Center
U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper ordered the removal of President Donald Trump’s name from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after a lawsuit filed by Rep. Joyce Beatty argued the renaming violated the law that only Congress can change the center’s name. The judge set a 14‑day deadline, which expired at 11:59 p.m. on June 12, 2026.
Workers erected scaffolding on June 12, covered the signage with tarps, and in the early hours of June 13 removed the letters from the marble façade. The Kennedy Center’s executive director, Matt Floca, confirmed that the name has been taken down from the building, its website and all official materials. The removal followed a series of legal challenges, a rejected request for a stay, and a brief weather‑related delay caused by thunderstorms.
The episode highlights a clash between the Trump‑aligned board’s attempt to rebrand the cultural institution and the judiciary’s enforcement of statutory naming authority, with crowds gathering to watch the symbolic restoration of the center’s original name.
