Kennedy Center renaming dispute triggers emergency federal hearing

A federal judge has scheduled an emergency hearing to address a legal challenge regarding the renaming of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Representative Joyce Beatty (D-OH), an ex officio member of the center’s board, filed an emergency motion seeking to block a plan to re-inscribe Donald Trump’s name on the building’s facade and rename the surrounding grounds ‘President Donald J. Trump Plaza.’

Beatty’s legal team argues that only Congress has the authority to rename the institution, which was established in 1964 as a living memorial to John F. Kennedy. The motion also contests a board decision to close the venue for two years for renovations, which critics suggest may be an attempt to remodel the complex in Trump’s image.

The board’s current proposal includes a condition where Trump’s name would be restored to the entrance if a renovation fund reaches $100 million in donations. If successful, the building would reportedly be titled ‘The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.’

U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper previously ruled that the board lacked the authority to rename the center and ordered Trump’s name removed from the facade in May. The judge has given the board until Monday to respond to the new emergency filing.
