Kennedy Osei Nyarko proposes Category A schools for every Ghanaian district

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, has proposed upgrading at least one secondary school in each of Ghana’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to Category A status.

The initiative aims to alleviate the intense competition and pressure currently placed on the Computerised School Selection and Placement System. By establishing high-quality, well-resourced institutions in every district, Osei Nyarko argues that students would have access to top-tier education locally, rather than being forced to compete for limited spots in prestigious schools located in other regions.

Osei Nyarko suggested that these upgraded schools should possess teaching staff and infrastructure comparable to leading institutions such as Achimota School, PRESEC, Mfantsipim School, Adisadel College, Wesley Girls’ High School, and Prempeh College. He also noted that the proposal draws inspiration from public school models in the United States, where school access is often linked to a student’s area of residence.
