Kenneth Branagh calls for vigilance on class representation in acting

At the Edinburgh International Film Festival, actor and director Kenneth Branagh called for “caution and vigilance” regarding class representation within the acting profession. Branagh, who serves as president of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), emphasized the ongoing need to ensure diverse voices have the opportunity to participate in British film and theatre.

Addressing concerns about whether the industry increasingly favors the wealthy, Branagh noted that while there is no “secret cabal” working to maintain a mono-quality in casting, the industry must remain attentive to accessibility. He highlighted the importance of talent combined with determination, noting that his own career was made possible through a discretionary grant from his local education authority.
