Kenneth Branagh reveals Marvel considered removing 'Thor' Dutch angles
Director Kenneth Branagh has revealed that Marvel Studios once considered removing the distinctive Dutch angles from the 2011 film 'Thor'. During an interview on the 'On Film... With Kevin McCarthy' podcast, Branagh explained that there were discussions within the studio regarding the cost of 'horizontalizing' the movie to use more conventional framing.
Branagh stated that the decision to retain the tilted camera angles was ultimately due to the prohibitive cost of making such changes. He defended the stylistic choice, noting that the canted framing was intended to reflect the visual style of classic Jack Kirby comic book runs and to provide a heightened sense of scale appropriate for a story about gods.
The 2011 film, which starred Chris Hemsworth, was a foundational entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and grossed over $449 million worldwide.
