Chesney described Poncho as a constant companion who brought joy and energy to his life and that of his longtime partner, Mary Nolan. The singer noted that the dog had been with him for fifteen years, having been introduced to him as a puppy to help him learn to attach to something.

Poncho, who was also known as Da Ponch, frequently accompanied Chesney on his travels, including on boats, buses, and even appearing onstage during a 2024 stadium show in Chicago.
