Kenscoff massacre: Gang attack in Haiti leaves dozens dead FAST-MOVING

Armed gangs launched a violent attack on the commune of Kenscoff, located in the hills above Port-au-Prince, during the night of Sunday, August 23, and the early hours of Monday, August 24, 2026. The assault, attributed to the Viv Ansanm gang coalition, resulted in a heavy death toll, with local officials reporting approximately 40 fatalities.

According to Kenscoff Mayor Massillon Jean, the attackers targeted several neighborhoods, set fire to homes and vehicles, and raided a displaced persons camp located within a church. The raid included the execution of several individuals, dozens of injuries, and multiple abductions.

In response to the massacre, the Haitian government declared a maximum alert for all security forces and announced that reinforcements would be sent to the area to restore order. The Office for Citizen Protection (OPC) and other human rights advocates have condemned the violence, calling for urgent measures to protect the population and investigate the crimes. This incident follows a pattern of instability in the region; UN reports indicate that Kenscoff has faced repeated waves of violence from armed groups since early 2025.
