Kenscoff, Haiti: Gang attack leaves dozens dead and many injured

A violent gang attack in Kenscoff, Haiti, during the night of August 23-24, 2026, has left dozens dead and many others injured. Massillon Jean, the interim executive agent of Kenscoff, reported that heavily armed individuals targeted several neighborhoods, including the town center and areas near the municipal hall and police station.

Reports from the human rights organization RNDDH suggest the death toll may be between 30 and 40 people, with 15 to 20 residents injured. The attackers targeted a church that was serving as a shelter for displaced persons, setting it on fire. Additionally, several homes and vehicles were burned, and some residents were reportedly kidnapped.

The Haitian National Police intervened to repel the attackers, and the government has deployed reinforcements to the area, vowing to restore order. The incident follows a pattern of gang violence in the region that has caused mass displacements over the last two years. Meanwhile, a UN-supported multinational force is being deployed to assist local security forces in combating gang control across the country.
