Kensington High School students relocate due to asbestos concerns

More than 400 Kensington High School students will begin the school year at a temporary campus located at the former Austin Meehan Middle School in Northeast Philadelphia. The relocation follows the discovery of asbestos concerns during the installation of a new HVAC system at the original Kensington High School building.

School District of Philadelphia officials stated that the move was necessary to ensure a safe and clean environment for students. Principal José Lebrón emphasized that safety was the primary factor in the decision. Work at the original school is expected to continue through December, with a planned return to the home campus in January.

Many families have expressed concerns regarding the significant commute, as the temporary site is nearly 10 miles away from the original school. Parents noted that bus trips could take between one and two and a half hours, particularly during rush hour. To manage the transition, the district has organized a system of buses and shuttles to transport students daily.
