Kent, Washington reports significant spike in homicides
The city of Kent has recorded 16 homicides so far this year, representing a 100% increase compared to the eight homicides reported in 2025. Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla informed the Kent City Council that the current trend is more significant than increases seen in neighboring cities like Renton and Auburn.
Of the incidents recorded, two were double homicides, including a fatal drive-by shooting on September 28 near the Interstate 5 overpass. Chief Padilla noted that the killings do not appear to be random acts of violence, stating that victims often knew their attackers or met them for a specific purpose. Domestic violence has been identified as a leading cause of the homicides.
Police have identified suspects in 12 of the cases. Currently, seven suspects are in custody awaiting trial or sentencing, while detectives are searching for five identified suspects who remain at large. Authorities expect to identify suspects in the remaining four cases due to solid leads.
