Kentucky AG joins 25 attorneys general in Supreme Court brief on voter citizenship

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman has joined 25 other state attorneys general in a legal brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court. The group is seeking to protect the authority of states to require proof of citizenship for voting and to permit the removal of noncitizens from voter rolls within 90 days of an election.

The brief asks the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court decision that found an Arizona law requiring citizenship proof to be unlawful. It also challenges a ruling stating that the National Voter Registration Act prevents states from removing illegal immigrants from voter rolls within the 90-day window preceding an election.

Coleman noted that Kentucky voters approved a constitutional amendment in November 2024 to bar non-citizens from voting in state elections. He argued that the legal challenges attempt to undermine state sovereignty regarding election integrity and security.
