Kentucky Auditor launches tool to track public benefit errors

Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts Ball has launched a new Public Benefit Error Rate Tracker, an online tool designed to monitor monthly error rates and estimated taxpayer waste within the Beshear administration’s public benefit programs.

The tool follows findings that the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) has struggled with high error rates in programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, and the Medicare Savings Program. Specifically, the Auditor reported that CHFS committed errors in 87.3% of all processed SNAP cases. These errors in SNAP issuance are estimated to cost taxpayers between $95 million and $113 million annually.

Total estimated waste resulting from CHFS errors is projected to be between $471 million and $692 million. Furthermore, the state faces a risk of exceeding federal limits for SNAP payment errors in fiscal year 2026, which could force Kentucky to use an estimated $60 million from its own general fund to cover lost federal funding.
