Kentucky expands medical cannabis access across all regions

Governor Andy Beshear announced that Kentucky’s medical cannabis program has reached a significant milestone, with dispensaries now operating in all 11 of the state’s licensing districts. Following the recent opening of the Sunnyside Medical Cannabis Dispensary in Prestonsburg, the state has achieved geographic coverage that places most residents within an hour of a retail location.

Of the 80 businesses originally approved through a lottery system, 46 are now operational. This includes 26 dispensaries, 13 cultivators, five processors, and two safety compliance facilities. Beshear noted that more than 29,000 Kentuckians have been approved for medical cannabis cards, and over 500 medical practitioners have registered to recommend the treatment for conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, and PTSD.

While the medical program continues to expand, recreational cannabis and smoking marijuana remain illegal under both state and federal law. Industry leaders noted that businesses face challenges such as advertising restrictions, which can make it difficult to reach potential patients.
