Kentucky Expands Safe Haven Baby Box Program to 457 Locations
Kentucky has increased its Safe Haven Baby Box network to 457 boxes across 26 states, aiming to provide a secure, anonymous option for parents in crisis. The program, founded by Monica Kelsey—who herself was born after being abandoned—has facilitated the safe surrender of 83 infants through the boxes and an additional 229 babies via assisted handoffs to police stations, fire stations, hospitals, and houses of worship. Over 9,000 calls have been made to the program’s dedicated phone line, offering resources and guidance to families.
State legislation HB 447 and HB 155 expanded the existing safe‑surrender laws, allowing the installation of climate‑controlled boxes equipped with silent alarms that alert staff within minutes. Boxes are placed conspicuously at staffed emergency locations, ensuring rapid response while preserving the anonymity of the surrendering parent.
