In the meantime, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Whip John Barrasso have spoken with McConnell, while his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, traveled to China, stating his condition did not require an immediate return to Washington. Former President Donald Trump said he had “no idea” about McConnell’s health, and the White House declined comment.
