Kentucky lawmakers press for rapid federal disaster declaration

Severe storms, flooding and tornadoes that battered Kentucky from June 17 to June 30, 2026 caused widespread damage and six fatalities, including three residents of Madison County. The weather destroyed 42 homes, left more than 100 businesses impacted, and caused extensive damage to roads, bridges and electric infrastructure across 19 counties and 13 cities that declared emergencies.

Governor Andy Beshear formally requested a Major Disaster Declaration on July 23. Sixteenth District Congressman Andy Barr led the Kentucky congressional delegation in a letter urging President Donald Trump to approve the request swiftly, seeking federal Public Assistance, Individual Assistance and Hazard Mitigation funding to help the affected communities recover.
