Kentucky State basketball player Aminata Seck detained by ICE

Aminata Seck, a 26-year-old basketball player for Kentucky State University, has been held in custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for over six weeks. Seck, a native of Dakar, Senegal, was detained on August 7 at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport while traveling with her team to New York.

Her attorney, Sadiqa Reynolds, stated that Seck is being held due to an expired student visa, characterizing the situation as an administrative error rather than a criminal matter. During her detention, Seck has been transferred between multiple facilities across Kentucky and Illinois, making it difficult for family, teammates, and coaches to maintain contact.

Adding to the complexity is a pre-existing ACL injury. Reynolds reports that Seck requires surgery and has struggled to receive adequate medical care while in custody, noting that she has primarily received ibuprofen for her pain. The attorney has expressed hope that the NCAA might intervene in the case.
