Kentucky State Police join international Brake Safety Week

The Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is participating in Brake Safety Week, an international initiative aimed at reducing crashes caused by defective large truck braking systems. Through August 29, officers and inspectors in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will conduct focused inspections.

This year’s initiative places a specific emphasis on brake drums and rotors. According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, brake issues are a leading cause of vehicles being placed out of service during roadside inspections. Improperly maintained components can reduce braking efficiency or dislodge while in motion, posing significant risks to drivers and the public.

Brake Safety Week is part of the CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Program, which has inspected over 3.4 million brakes since 1998. The campaign coincides with Brake Safety Awareness Month to promote safer commercial motor vehicle operations across North America.
