Kentucky urges participation in 2026 Great ShakeOut earthquake drill

Kentucky Emergency Management is encouraging residents to participate in the 2026 Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, scheduled for October 15. The initiative is part of Kentucky Earthquake Awareness Week, which runs from October 11 to 17.

At 10:15 a.m. local time on the day of the drill, participants are instructed to practice the ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ method. Officials recommend identifying safe locations, such as under sturdy furniture or against interior walls, to protect against falling objects, glass, and collapsing structures.

To prepare for potential seismic activity, the agency advises citizens to establish emergency plans, replenish supply kits, and conduct home hazard hunts for unsecured items. Information and safety tips are also available through FEMA via text service.
