Kenya advances major industrial, mining, and infrastructure projects
Kenya is advancing several large-scale industrial and strategic projects aimed at economic transformation. A major development is the US$16 billion Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu, which is scheduled to break ground on September 30, 2026. The refinery is expected to have a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and could create up to 60,000 jobs.
In the mining sector, Kenya is working toward increasing the industry's contribution to 10% of GDP by 2030. The government is in advanced negotiations with the United States for a critical minerals partnership to establish local refining and processing plants. This includes competition for the Mrima Hill project, where firms from the US, Australia, and China are vying for rights to develop deposits of niobium, cobalt, copper, and nickel.
Infrastructure developments include the approval of feasibility studies for four strategic port assets in Mombasa and Lamu, representing approximately $1 billion in planned private investment. Additionally, the government has initiated a feasibility study for a proposed national spaceport to enter the global space economy. On the diplomatic front, Kenya and Italy are implementing the Italy-Kenya Action Plan 2026-2029 to deepen cooperation in trade, security, and technology.
