Kenya aims to develop cocoa as a major export crop
The Kenyan government is working to establish cocoa as a significant agricultural export to diversify the nation's economy, which currently relies heavily on tea, flowers, and horticulture. Under a national program, authorities plan to distribute 2 million cocoa seedlings to farmers by the end of 2026.
President William Ruto recently reaffirmed this initiative in Endebess, noting that the government is considering subsidies to ensure seedlings remain affordable for citizens. To support the industry, a seed production center will be established at the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) in Kaptagat.
While authorities estimate that approximately 5.9 million hectares of land could potentially support cocoa cultivation, the industry remains in its early stages. Successful scaling will depend on crop adaptation, improving farm yields, and securing reliable access to profitable international markets. Seedling distribution is expected to target several counties, including Elgeyo-Marakwet, Meru, Kirinyaga, and Kilifi.
