Kenya and Japan expand cooperation to strengthen health systems

Kenya and Japan are expanding their health sector cooperation to build more resilient and self-reliant health systems. During the first Japan–Kenya Health Cooperation Meeting held on October 5, 2026, officials discussed strengthening research, local manufacturing, health financing, and workforce development.

A primary focus of the partnership is reducing reliance on imported medical products by linking scientific research to the development of medicines, diagnostics, and medical technologies. The collaboration aims to expand early-stage research and clinical trials while combining Japanese expertise with Kenyan institutions and the private sector to bolster local production.

The initiative aligns with Kenya’s goal to manufacture its first locally produced vaccine by 2027, a key component of the country’s Universal Health Coverage agenda. Previous support from Japan includes a commitment of Ksh3 billion toward strengthening vaccine research and manufacturing capacity. Additionally, the cooperation will address health financing, specialized training, and the development of infrastructure to support Kenya’s potential as a regional hub for health innovation.
