Kenya banking sector launches sustainable finance roadmap
The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA), through its Centre for Sustainable Finance and Enterprise Development, has launched the Banking Industry Sustainable Finance Roadmap. Developed in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and WWF-Kenya, the strategic framework aims to guide financial institutions in scaling sustainable finance and strengthening climate and nature risk management.
The roadmap provides a blueprint for embedding sustainability into governance, risk management, lending decisions, and capital allocation. It is designed to help the sector identify climate-related risks, unlock green investment opportunities, and assist micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in transitioning to a more resilient economy.
Festus Ngeno, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, stated that the framework is a significant step toward strengthening the financial sector’s contribution to Kenya’s climate ambitions. He emphasized that environmental protection must be integrated into core economic planning through collaboration between the government, financial institutions, and development partners.
