Kenya conducts tax exemption vetting for persons with disabilities

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) is conducting a vetting exercise in collaboration with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) to facilitate income tax exemptions for persons with disabilities.

Under the Persons with Disabilities Act and the Income Tax (Exemptions) Order, eligible individuals may be exempt from income tax on the first Ksh 150,000 of their monthly income, which amounts to up to Ksh 1.8 million annually. This measure is intended to provide greater financial autonomy to help manage costs associated with disabilities.

The vetting process involves a committee of medical experts from the Ministry of Health to verify disability severity, tax officials from the KRA to ensure compliance, and NCPWD representatives to coordinate the exercise. Applicants must provide a valid NCPWD Disability Membership Certificate, a government-gazetted disability assessment report, a Tax Compliance Certificate, a KRA PIN, and proof of income.
