Kenya confirms first Ebola case and death after patient returns from DRC

Kenya has confirmed its first case of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola following the death of a Kenyan national in Nairobi. The patient, who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for seven years, fell ill approximately one month ago while in the DRC. After receiving treatment in several Congolese hospitals, the individual traveled by road to Kampala, Uganda, and subsequently flew to Nairobi on a Jambojet flight, arriving on October 3.

The patient was admitted to Nairobi Hospital and placed in isolation, but died on Monday evening. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale reported that the patient exhibited symptoms including fever, chills, extreme fatigue, muscle pain, and subcutaneous bleeding. Laboratory tests at the National Virology Reference Laboratory and the Kenya Medical Research Institute confirmed the infection.

Health authorities have identified 57 contacts, including family members and medical staff, and are actively tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight. The Africa CDC is deploying a high-level team to support Kenya. Meanwhile, the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC remains severe, with over 8,500 confirmed cases and 4,000 deaths reported, prompting increased surveillance in neighboring countries like Uganda and Sierra Leone.
